Learning alone isn’t the only way to learn. While many guitar teachers offer one on one lessons, this isn’t the best tactic for all learners.

Some of us simply learn better with others around us. They can help give us confidence, and they can also make the experience more enjoyable. With a room full of personalities, we can have fun while we are learning.

Before we talk about the benefits, let’s get through the negative side. While there aren’t many negatives to group lessons, the few that there are will make a large impact on your decision.

Obnoxiousness:

We all know someone we cannot stand. Whether they act that way on purpose or without thought, the result is the same. You should take into consideration that you may wind up with the one forty year old in your group who still believe that he is that greatest and funniest thing in the world. If you are someone who has trouble learning with excessive noise, you will want to keep this in mind.

Group level:

If you are learning as a group, you are learning as a group. No matter how easy the lessons become, the group is one unit. You won’t have the opportunity to advance due to your skill. There may come a time where you can switch groups, but more often than not that isn’t an option.

Why?

Most instructors that do group lessons do very few of them. Sometimes they only do one. You will be held at the collective level of the group and guitar lessons progresses as far as the slowest person in the group moves along.

Now that you know some of the negatives, let’s go over the positives that can come from group lessons.

Friendship:

Sometimes music is made better by the people you meet through it. In most cases, working as a group will bring you closer to other people who share a common interest with you. If your relationships develop enough you may find yourself with a group of jamming partners. You could even start a band, whether it be a cover band or a band just for fun.

Pricing:

More often than not if you can get a few friends to sign up with you, you can get a discount for a group class. Be careful of the friends you choose though, as you have to remember that you will be learning. If your friends tend to goof off, you may want to reconsider and pay a little extra in order to join a class on your own.

Fun:

Learning in a group is just plain fun. Musicians tend to feed off of each other’s energy. This means that one excited person can create a room full of excited people. Having others around you working on the same pieces can motivate you, provided you aren’t self-conscious.

In the end, the best decision is the one that best fits your personality. If you are an extrovert, or even an introvert trying to break your habits, group lessons will be perfect for you. If you are an introvert and are comfortable with it, group lessons may not be for you.
