How to Use Guitar Compression Effects Pedal

In this video guitar lesson, you will learn how to work a guitar compression effects pedal to its full effect easily. Basically, what compression does is that it helps levels of the high volume sounds (less brightness) and supports the lower volume sound (creates a long sustain). This makes the guitar sound "softer" and much more pleasant to the ears when playing certain kinds of music.

Together with using guitar effects such as delay, chorus and distortion, learning how to use the compression effect can open up a wide spectrum of guitar playing creativity. Chris Liepe is your instructor today and will take you through how to use the compression guitar effects in this lesson.

Common FAQ for using compression effects

- Where would you place the compressor in a chain of effects?

A compressor deals with signal processing and should always be placed prior to any modulating effects. Generally, the compressor would be the first in the line of effects. Of course, there are unconventional use of this effects in different scenarios, but that will be another lesson all together.

- What exactly does the compressor impact your tone?

In layman's terms, the compressor can help you sustain your guitar notes. This enables your to add a liquid quality to your clean guitar tone. Also, the use of compressors will also be determined depending on what kind of genres you are playing.

Typically, funk and pop music musicians use this effect to add volume consistentcy (without sometimes being too loud or too soft) and to give them a much needed edge in their rhythm guitar playing.

At the end of the day, guitar effects should be used as a means to achieve a specific sound that cannot be generated by normal means. However, when I play at gigs, I notice that many amatuer guitarists acutally use guitar effects as a means to cover up their inept guitar techniques. This will cause serious problems in the long term.

To truly master the guitar, you will need to polish up your skills. This is where Jamplay can help you. Visit their website by clicking the banner below to find out more...
