Points to take note of when learning to play Aqualung
1 - Learning to play cover songs can be a fun thing to do. However, what I do not advice students
to do is to learn a song blindly. For example, when you are learning the guitar solo for Aqualung, instead of
blindly following the solo note for note, what you should do is to understand the theory behind the music. In this
example, the G minor pentatonic is used to play the solo. It would be advisable for you to understand minor pentatonic scales so that you can improvise or play the song in your own
style.
2 - In the acoustic part of the rhythm playing, the string raking technique is used. You need to
take note that this raking shouldn't be done anywhere or anyhow. The placement of your fingers actually cause noise
( as well as harmonics ) to be formed. Don't believe me? Try raking the strings at different positions of the
guitar. You'll get different sounds and pitch.
3 - Break up your learning into chunks. It is always easier for the human brain to understand and
process information when it is given in smaller portions. For a long solo, tackling it by parts will actually help
you learn the solo faster. After you had learned the different parts, simply piece together the different portions
of it to form the complete guitar solo.
