When people see great guitar players such as Joe Satriani or Paul Gilbert improvise on the guitar, most tend to think that they must be born with the talent for guitar improvising or a special skillset that they themselves do not have.

The idea of performing guitar improvisation yourself is not far fetched or impossible. Guitar improvisation is a skill in which anyone could pick up and get better at.

Most people do not realize that when these guitar gurus solo or improvise on the guitar, they already have a wealth of musical knowledge or music mastery.

It might seem like they are playing random notes in a guitar solo all over the guitar but the truth is that they are probably sticking to a scale 90% of the time. Imagine this, if you had the some knowledge of these scales and guitar techniques mastery, would you be able to play some simple improvisation? OF COURSE you would.

To get started on guitar improvisation , one would need to have some basic understandings and learn the major scales, minor scales, pentatonic scales on guitar. These are some of the most fundamental scales that any guitarist would require to improvise.

Once you had learnt these scales, the next step of playing the guitar would be to learn some guitar techniques that are frequently used on lead guitar playing such as hammer ons and pull offs. With some practice and basic guitar theory, you can learn how to play guitar licks and riffs of your own creations.
