Guitar Songwriting Overview
Songwriting on
guitar is both an art and a science. As much as that description sounds like a cliché, it is still the
truth.
There is a formula or “science” behind writing great songs, but there is also “art” in the ability to
express meaning and feeling within the confines of that formula. Truly great songwriters follow “the rules” as well
as break them in ingenious ways.
In this report, you’re going to learn a bit about these basic songwriting
basics. You’re also going to learn how to break them. It’ll be up to you to bring in the ‘genius’ part ;-)
Also, I should mention that my approach to songwriting is somewhat untraditional. I’m going to do my best to
give you just as much information about “philosophical” approaches to song craft as I do the ‘hard and fast’
rules.
Why?
Because that’s really where the “art” comes into play. A majority of songs center thematically on time-tested
subjects like love and the meaning of life. So, you’ve got to think outside the box if you want to find new ways to
express old ideas.
You could say that the heart and mind of a Songwriter walks an edge somewhere between that of an Architect and a
Poet. Your job is to create beauty and meaning out of form and structure.

Let’s say a melody pops into your head, and it’s just begging to be used as the chorus for your next song. You
can run with it, but you must also know you’ve got your work cut out for you in coming up with the verses to
support it.
In other words, songwriting can be messy. You’re not always going to sit down and write a song from beginning to
end in a linear fashion. There are times when your creative inspiration forces you to “work backwards.”
But, that’s what the rules and formulas and “science” are there for: to help you rescue that half-formed idea,
expand on it, and sculpt it into a really good song. You’ll see this process become more natural and subconscious
over time. Your mind will start generating lyric ideas that are already
well-structured.
That said, you and I have never met. I can only guess at what your experience level might already be when it
comes to writing songs. However, I promise you’ll glean some valuable insights from this report, no matter your
skill level, if you’ll take the time to give serious thought to the material and put it into practice.
