3 Steps to Get Creative And Thinking Out of the Box

improvisation creativitySo you want to get more creative with your playing? Well, you’ve taken the proper first step; you’ve made the initiative to go and find out how it can be done.

Now, all that’s left is to actually do it. This may sound like the easy part—and it is—but it can be a bit difficult for some guitarists because some guitarists have gotten themselves into the “box,” from which they need to break out.

In this article, we’ll give you a few steps that will help you to break out of the box and be creative with your guitar improvisations.

Step One: There is No Box

Didn’t we just tell you there was a box?

Well, the only way to break out of it is to make it non-existing, hence there is no box.

If you want to break out of your average, every day improvisations, you will need to force yourself to believe that there is nothing holding you back. Thus, the box cannot exist if you are to play outside of it; you don’t want to simply tip-toe around its boundaries—you don’t want it there at all.

Step Two: Play!

That’s right; in order to get creative, you have to play.

Playing is the only way that you will better yourself as a musician, this it is necessary for you to play in order for you to break out of that box that we talked about—you know, the one that doesn’t exist?

Take some time each day, even if it is only ten minutes, and simply play. Don’t think about what arpeggios you need to work on, or how much you can improve upon your alternate picking or your economy picking. Simply sit and start jamming away. That is one of the best ways to break out of the same old rut of playing the same old riffs and the same old licks.

This rut happens because, when you sit down to play, you think too much about what you are playing instead of just simply allowing yourself to have free reign and play your darn guitar!

If you want the surest way to break out of the rut, this is it; don’t think, just sit down and play. Go wherever your mind takes you. Don’t think about what happened today or what may happen tomorrow; just play your guitar.

Step Three: Do it All Over Again

Start from the top.

If you want to be creative, you’ll have to do the two steps above on a constant basis.

Let’s face it; we all get stuck sometimes. Even the most creative people find themselves treading a well-worn line. That’s how you know it’s okay. But don’t let yourself stick to that line. If you notice that you are stuck following it, force yourself out of your comfort zone and you will be taking a big step toward preserving your creativity and bettering yourself as a musician.

Have fun—that’s the golden rule—and good luck with your playing!
